Where are we moving to? And other questions your pet can't ask you

Moving into your new home can be an exciting, albeit overwhelming task. Pets can find it particularly stressful; after all they can’t ask you what’s happening and talk about their feelings on the big move with you!

To make sure they love your new home as much as you do, as well as don’t run riot and turn the place upside down, here are some tips to help them adjust;

• Set up their bed and feeding areas straight away. This gives them familiarity and reassurance that things are returning to normal.

• Give them time to explore and get used to their new surroundings but be careful not to rush them. Depending on their personality they will do what they need to do to get settled into their new living arrangements.

• Bring their favourite toys and put these out straight away. While you might feel the temptation to get them new toys to go with your new home, this can work against helping your beloved pooch or kitty feel settled.

• Stick to their usual routine as much as possible. If you normally walk them each morning continue to do so. Keep to the regular feeding times and time you normally reserve aside for them as much as possible.

• Remember this is an adjustment period for them too so try to spend more quality time together and give them extra love and attention.

• Don’t leave them alone for too long. They may get anxious and do some naughty things they wouldn’t normally do. You may even need to get a babysitter for them for the times you have to go out.

Cats can take even longer to adjust to new surroundings than other pets, so some extra tips for cats are;

• It’s a good idea to keep cats inside for at least a week so they don’t go out and get lost, or worse run away and don’t come back!

• Introduce cats gradually to your new home a couple of rooms at a time. This helps them become familiar with their new surroundings and gives them a refuge later if they need it. In these rooms, ensure there aren’t any open doors, windows or crawl spaces you can’t access.
