Choose the home security system that is most suitable for you

The Australian Institute of Criminology considers household burglary to be one of the most pervasive crimes in Australia – 335,700 break-ins were reported in 2009-2010, and 36 per cent of Australians believe that their homes will be targeted by burglars in the following year. 2015 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal that the number of property crime offences have increased since 2010, even though the number of robbery victims in Australia have been decreasing for the past five years.

Most victims will suffer the loss of money (19%) and jewellery (18%), while others might suffer the loss of firearms or expensive consumer electronics items. Many might also suffer from the subsequent fear and paranoia that might follow the discovery of a break-in.
Naturally, most homeowners are interested in knowing how they can deter burglars from breaking into their homes.

A study by Dr Natalie Gately from the ECU School of Law and Justice concluded that burglars are unlikely to target a home when its occupants are present, or when dogs (that will alert the neighbours through their barking) are present. Burglars are also deterred by sensor lights, alarm systems and security screens, which form a second line of defence when your home is vacant. Here’s a brief guide to some of the most popular home security systems:

Security Cameras
A Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV security system) offers an effective way of deterring burglars, who will think twice about breaking into your house due to the cameras’ ability to record their actions and to alert you remotely via your monitor or smartphone. Depending on your budget, you can install a number of indoor and outdoor CCTV camera systems to enhance the protection of your home. Bullet and dome cameras are typically equipped with high definition visual display output and 20-30m of night vision. Be sure to install a camera at every possible entry point (e.g. every door and window) for maximum security.

Wi-Fi IP Cameras
YesCam manufactures indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi IP cameras that are easy to set up, offering an efficient solution to monitoring your home, valuables, children and pets. The cameras record HD-quality footage that can be viewed on your tablet or phone via an app. It is also equipped with motion, sound and temperature sensors that can trigger an alarm, initiate automatic recording and notify you via phone. The two-way audio system also allows you to monitor and communicate with your family members from your phone when you are away from home.

Wireless Alarm Kits
A wireless alarm kit usually comes with siren strobes that can be installed inside and outside the home to serve as an effective crime deterrent, and to alert everyone within earshot when a burglar breaks into your home. You can select a suitable siren duration time, and control the entire system remotely via an app on your phone.

Lock Alarms
A lock alarm offers a final line of protection for your most valuable belongings, e.g. jewellery, laptops, iPads, etc. All you have to do is place your valuables in the storage tray provided, and then lock the steel cable to prevent your portable safe from being opened or removed by unauthorised people.

With the wide range of home security systems and devices available on the market, it is up to homeowners to select the products that they are most comfortable with. Besides looking at the options available and their individual features, it is of course necessary to also consider the size and type of your home, as well as your budget. The important thing here is to take action – with the appropriate home security system in place, you can be assured that your valuables and family members will be well protected against the possibility of a home intrusion.
