A bright side to winter in your new home

Winter can be pretty harsh, although in Western Australia it's really not as bad as some other parts of the country. However, we do still feel the cold, and rugging up in winter is one of the best cures for short days and dropping temperatures. Thankfully, if you've just built a , you have a warm and efficient house that keeps your family healthy and dry throughout the winter months.

While staying indoors is never as fun as entertaining in your alfresco area or playing with the kids on the lawn, there are plenty of great ways to spend time in your new home. Here are a couple of our favourites.

Games night

A family games night is not only a great way to bond and increase communication and logic skills, but it can be a way to bridge the gap between generations. Many apg come with a dedicated media room or sitting room, which is ideal for getting the family around a game of snakes and ladders - but video games can be just as good.

Many sources say that TV and computer games are a great way for children and parents to connect in a way that is understandable and relevant. It's also good to take the opportunity to learn from your kids and wonder at the skills they have developed.

Strategic planning

When summer comes around you'll have a million things you want to do. In a city as great as Perth, it's no surprise that there will be an endless array of activities to try and not enough time to do it all. Instead of letting your projects and hobbies fall by the wayside, plan now to get the most out of the longer days and warmer weather ahead.

Whether it's doing up the garden for your new narrow lot home, exploring the city by bike or learning a new craft, setting time aside in your family's calendar can mean everyone gets to enjoy what they love, and nothing gets left out.
