1. 4 to 6 weeks before your move
- Research your new home
- Contact removalists & ask for recommendations
- Speak to your removalist about packing recommendations
- Arrange pet care
- Book in annual leave, with some days either side to pack up and then get settled.
- Arrange transport for you, your family and big items such as motorbikes, boats, trailers etc.
- If you need to move a piano, pool table or large items, make sure your removalist knows about them.
- Keep your important documents in a separate box - passports, flight tickets, visas, credit cards etc.
- Declutter your home
- Contact suppliers for water, electricity and gas
- Contact insurance companies
- Transfer relevant documents for school, day-care and sporting clubs
- Obtain a floor-plan of your new home and consider furniture placement and measure items now (beds, fridge, freezer etc)
- Book your removalist in and let them know about street access, steep driveways, overhanging trees as well as access doorways, tight hallways or tricky corners in the current and new place.
- Schedule & book cleaning
- Plan your move
- Organise utilities for your new home like the internet, telephone and electricity
- Label and number your moving boxes and create an inventory list
- Prepare and organise large house items
- Confirm key collection details
- Update your details on electoral rolls, drivers license, registrations, banks, employers, schools and clubs
- Get your family prepared for the move. Arrange for someone to mind small children on moving day and service the car if moving long-distance or interstate
- Organise mail, subscriptions and services
- Ensure the new home is prepared
- Organise furniture, including dismantling what you can and ensuring screws, bolts and nut are put in zip lock bags with labels (put it in the essentials box)
- Organise your moving boxes
- Go through the last details including filling any prescriptions, returning borrowed items (library books, dvd's) and if your house will be empty, inform police and neighbours.
- Have an action plan for moving day
- Ensure you do final checks
- Get prepared for the trip including tech items and having some cash available
- Organise last items
- Make sure your new home is ready
- Advise the neighbours and say goodbye - give them a copy of your new details just in case
- Advise new residents with a friendly note with garbage collection, neighbourhood water etc to help them settle in
- Complete forms
- Finish organising for the move
- Say goodbye to your old home (check through the house, locking doors and windows, ensuring everything is off)
- Check items before and after the move.
