How to spring clean your garage door

Spring is finally here, and in addition to spring cleaning your home – hopefully this includes your garage – don’t forget to spring clean your garage door as well. Not only will this allow you to get rid of dust and dirt so the exterior of your home looks clean and presentable, but it will also give you the chance to inspect your garage door and make sure that everything is working properly. Here’s how to go about it.

Clean the exterior of the garage door

For most garage doors, a gentle soap or detergent is all you need for cleaning, but do speak to your garage door expert about the best cleaning agents to use. Avoid using abrasive cleaners and very strong liquid cleaners that could damage the paint or cause delaminating. Once you have all the tools you will need, all you have to do is:

· Spray the surface of the garage door with your hose
· Wipe down using an old cloth that has been soaked in warm, soapy water
· Spray off excess soapy water with your hose and allow to dry
· If necessary, apply a coat of paint

Inspect the garage door

While you are cleaning your garage door, keep an eye out for any damage, including paint flaking or warping, or metal underneath the paint that is showing through. You want to make sure that any exposed metal is dealt with quickly to avoid rust and corrosion.

Clean the interior of the garage door

Using the same method that you used for the exterior, clean the interior of your garage door, especially the tracks, to remove any accumulated dirt or grime. Even though the interior of the garage door will not be seen by outsiders, keeping it clean will help to prolong the life of the garage door’s mechanisms, which is just as important!

Lubricate

Lubricate the rollers, tracks and hinges, as well as all moving hardware parts with a little motor oil, taking care to wipe off excess oil with a cloth. Using a cloth, apply the same oil to the springs as well. This will prolong the life of your garage door, and also reduce the noise the mechanism makes when your garage door is opening and closing.

Deal with any damage

If you find any damage, particularly with the mechanism, contact your garage door expert immediately. Do not attempt to make any adjustments to the extension or springs yourself, as this could be very dangerous!

If any garage door repairs are required, make sure you find a reputable and experienced professional for the job, as a poor job will not only waste your time and money, but also potentially put you and your family at risk from a malfunctioning garage door.

Ultimately, your garage door is an often overlooked but very important part of your home. With just a little TLC (read: tender loving care) once in a while, some careful attention from you, and if necessary, the professional services of a garage door expert, it will serve you well for many years to come.
