Tracing the history of Australia’s backyard pool experts “Blue Haven Pools”

Blue Haven Pools has led the Australian pool and spa industry for almost 50 years, solidifying its position as one of the most trusted suppliers. Today, the company offers a wide range of backyard solutions, including in-ground and above-ground pools, plunge pools, and spas.

Blue Haven’s history

In 1973, Yennora-based Ray Awadallah began manufacturing and installing vinyl-lined above-ground pools. Backyard pools, he noticed, were a source of joy and fun for families Australia-wide, prompting him to start the Blue Haven journey.

After expanding and gaining awareness, Blue Haven pools launched the Kevlar-reinforced fibreglass pool in 1981. The new offering made installation more accessible, and the company experienced dramatic growth as a result. According to a report conducted at the time, Blue Haven Pools sold up to ten times more pools than any other provider for almost 15 years in a row. Blue Haven Pools became the preferred supplier for Australian customers.

The Australian Design Award was handed to Blue Haven Pools in 1987 after developing the world’s first semi-inground pool design. The new steel and vinyl offering could withstand corrosion and saltwater chlorination, paving a new way forward for pools.

Aside from the accolades, Blue Haven Pools has an iconic status in the history of Australia: they took over Wonderland’s The Beach, and they won near-yearly awards at The Royal Easter Show. They built many of the pools that Australians across the generations grew up in learning to swim. The Blue Haven elephant, which has become synonymous with the brand, encapsulates the pool’s winning advantages. A Blue Haven pool can withstand the weight of an elephant, representing optimum strength and durability. To this day, there are pools installed in the ‘70s that continue to serve their owners.

The company’s success reached further than local shores, expanding into the USA, UK, and Italy during the ‘90s. At this time, Blue Haven Pools also branched into concrete pools. These pools would change how we use and design them, taking the backyard pool into the modern era. Around the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Blue Haven sold almost 2,000 concrete pools in any given year.

The modern Blue Haven

In 2011, Blue Haven Pools was taken over by Awadallah’s daughter, Remonda Martinez, who now operates as CEO. Growing up with the business, Martinez experienced all facets of the company from a young age. As one of the only female CEOs in the industry, Martinez has made impressive strides and updates to Blue Haven, awarding her titles including Business Woman of the Year and Construction Finalist for CEO Magazine.

Since inheriting the title, the company has transitioned into an approachable and tech-savvy provider, making online pool sales available and seamless. Pools can be purchased by the package, minimising pressure and creating a stress-free, hands-off and enjoyable experience.

Blue Haven specialises in a range of backyard pool and spa options, whether in-ground or above-ground, concrete or fibreglass. Plunge pools for small areas and courtyards are popular alongside custom designs to perfectly fit the given site. Add a lap pool if the space permits or an Enviro Smart Mineral Pool to minimise environmental impact. Blue Haven also offers a range of bespoke additions to enhance the luxuriousness and help create a private oasis: glass windows, infinity edges, swim jets, and more.

Welcome to the new era of Blue Haven Pools.
