Technically you can run Cat5e which can do 1000Mb/s but generally to about 50 metres or so. The difference in cost between Cat5e and Cat6 cable is minimal these days.

Biggest difference between telstra velocity and NBN is that telstra velocity only has one provider (bigpond) while NBN will wholesale to all providers. Telstra, optus, iprimus, iinet, internode etc.
