You might think you have a secure type of glass installed at your home - but do you? On occasions, having the most common or plain glass is more of a safeguard than what many would class as secure.

The threat of injury to themselves or alerting nearby residents to the sound of breaking glass makes the cheapest glass like sheet or float, more of a threat or deterrent for burglars than for example, wired or tempered glass.

It comes down, basically, to preference and requirements, but here are the most common types available.

Sheet

Sheet glass has no real security deterrent other than it makes a noise when broken and can cause injury. It’s cheap and is mainly used for greenhouses and sheds.

Float

Float or plate glass is occasionally used for windows and doors and again, has no security value, except it makes a definitive noise when broken and potential injury.

Cast

Cast, or patterned glass, is usually used in bathroom and door windows where you would require privacy or light and breaks in the same way as float glass. There is no security other than the noise it makes and the risk of injury.

Wired

Usually made from float glass, wired glass is mostly used in fire doors. The wires help to hold the glass together in a fire and although there are special types available, normal wired glass has no security value and is less likely to make noise or cause injury.

Toughened (Tempered)

Made from float glass that has been specially treated, it is used as a safety glass both in the home and in commercial premises. It is made-to-measure at the factory and cannot be cut on site and has little security value because it can be easily broken with a sharp object and makes hardly any noticeable noise.

Laminated

Laminated glass consists of two sheets of float glass with an interlayer of polyvinyl butyral and is available in many varying thicknesses and interlaying materials. It has many other uses including noise control and, using toughened glass, can combine the benefits of safety and security glass when large sheets are required.

Adding value to your property is probably the underlying factor in the choice. There’s an old saying, ‘if you’re going to get a job done, get it done properly’.
