I suggest you look at vinyl planks / tiles as an alternative. eg Karndean.
Tough, water resistant, and warm under foot. And a wide range to choose from!

Why not try the stain you want, or a varnish/stain combination. If it doesn't give the desired look, then you could paint over it.
